International Days and a question about what makes them special…

Today is International Women’s Day, and it got me to thinking. How many “days” are actually “International”?……. As it turns out……a lot….

Nevermind all the fake Facebook ones or the cheesy menial “national” or “regional” days, let’s just talk “INTERNATIONAL”……(so snobby, I know)

Here is March alone; (according to the UN website)

8 March International Women’s Day
20 March International Day of Happiness A/RES/66/281
21 March International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination A/RES/2142 (XXI)
21 March World Poetry Day [UNESCO]
21 March International Day of Nowruz A/RES/64/253
21 March World Down Syndrome Day A/RES/66/149
draft A/C.3/66/L.27
21 March International Day of Forests and the Tree A/RES/67/200
22 March World Water Day A/RES/47/193
23 March World Meteorological Day  [WMO] WMO/EC-XII/Res.6
24 March World Tuberculosis Day [WHO] WMO/EC-XII/Res.6
24 March International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims A/RES/65/196
25 March International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade A/RES/62/122
25 March International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members

Don’t get my tone wrong, I have 3 mothers a girlfriend and nothing but close female friends, BUT, WHY THE HELL DO I NEED AN INTERNATIONAL DAY to be more “AWARE” of them? Or even “CELEBRATE” them? I tell almost all of them about my love and admiration every other day of the year and it seems to go over just fine…

I’m a lover of POETRY, but you won’t see me at Times Square chanting out sonnets on the 21st of March, ANY more likely than I am going to treat today “special”.

I guess this is a simple rant about;

  • Not needing Valentines to tell someone I love them.
  • Loathing that a UN sanctioned “day” gains more attention than most current GLOBAL issues or UN problems.
  • Asking “WHY?” people LOVE “International” or “Global” days but do little to raise a finger to CHANGE local problems….

I guess I just wonder why we need the “OCEAN” of GLOBAL or INTERNATIONAL to mobilize, when the “POND” of  LOCAL or REGIONAL is massive enough.

Does “Globalization” mean “anti-Localism”?

How do you celebrate “International” days vs. “Local” ones? What makes an “International” day more sensitive than a “Local” one?

Get to doing! (Done is better than perfect)
